This is the homepage for the Final Year Project by Dan Clancy. The title of the research project that was carried out was “How can technology be used to collate and disseminate local knowledge to enhance tourism in Kinsale?”. This project was carried out as part of my 4th Year Final Project.

The reason that I chose to undertake this specific project was due to me living in Kinsale myself since I was 5 I found that even with all of the tourists that came into the town especially over summer there were still parts of the town I felt they were missing whether this was from talking to them or just even seeing where they would congregate.

In order to address this I undertook this project in order to see if there was a way that I could potentially fix this issue. And after testing and some research it was found that an interactive map would be the best way to display this information.

The information that is presented on the map is from 3 different sources. The first source was my own knowledge from living in Kinsale for almost 16 years. The second source was from on the internet. This source was mainly utilised for generic information such as Kinsale’s history or for the standard information on the map which was gotten from Google Maps. The third and most important source of information was the local knowledge. This was collected through the use of interviews with a variety of locals being interviewed. I would also like to take the chance to greatly thank all of these locals for the help they have given me.

In more recent times Kinsale has really blown up as a tourist destination. It has a big draw due to its quality food, its beaches and also its proximity to the Old Head of Kinsale Golf Club which is one of the premier courses in Ireland.

The town itself is also a large commuter town due to its proximity to Cork and Lilly in Dunderrow meaning the town has seen huge growth in the last few decades.
